Doesn’t it seem like players are supposed to bet if they have a good hand and fold if they don’t? Don’t fall into this trap when you are just starting out. A bet usually means a player thinks he has the best hand and he will put money on it, or he thinks you have a weak hand and you will fold if your forced to put money on your hand. You must know how to bet and in what situation. You must know when to hold’em and when to fold’em And then this all depends on hand strength, position at the table, number of players, pot odds, and player style.
Your basic Texas Hold’em poker betting strategy should focus on trying to figure out what cards the other players are holding. You need to pay attention to everyone at the table to know what type of betting to do agaist each player.
You also want to try to place bets without others guessing your hand and moves. The basic strategy is: read your opponents, bet when you have the cards or when you sence weakness and muck when you don’t have the cards or sence stregth.
Position is very important in poker. If you are dealt strong cards, you may want to limp in early position.
This way, if somebody following you raises, you have the opportunity to re-raise. If you are in late position,
you have the luxury of seeing what people before you have done. You also want to consider all factors of pre-flop strategy
There are a few types of bets you can do. Before we go that far, if you are going to bet when you are first into the
pot, you want to come in with 3-4X the size of big blind. If there are a couple of players who bet and call infront of you
and you still want to raise, you should bet 1 extra size of the big blind per extra player. You can bet to get information from your players. If you bet and your opponent comes over you with a raise, he most probably has something really good. You may also bet large and they may call. This is usually signs of a draw or slow playing. Or you may bet to get info. and your opponent will just fold. Bet to get information!
Another type of bet is the check-raise. This is when you check “knowing” your opponent will bet so that you can raise him. You can do this with or without a great hand. A check-raise is usually a sign of stregth.
You can bet when you are ther first to act or for the first in the pot. This is done to limit the number of players in the hand. You may want to do this to get rid of the smaller hands that may suck out on you. The remaining players who stayed in the pot, they are being aggresive or truly have a great hand. Also, this is best done with few players in the hand.
There is also the All-in bet. You want to use this either when you are short stacked (less than 5X the BB),
know you have the best hand and think your opponent will call, or feel your opponent is weak and will fold to the all-in.
You want to try to not go all-in agaist someone with more chips than you just incase they have you beat.
You can make a bluff bet. This is a bet that is made to try and force your opponents out of the hand while you do not
have a made hand. Every poker player must be able to bluff. You can bluff when you feel your opponent has nothing,
or when you have great potiential for a big hand. The bluff words best when unexpected. You can not bluff too much,
but you need to bluff enough.
And last but surely not least is betting while using your pot odds. You must use pot odds to determine if betting,
calling, and raising is the right thing to do. This will give you a reason to do things in certain situations.
You should always remember that there is the element of luck in texas hold’em. You can have a great strategy and you will always be given bad beats. But by having a good betting strategy and knowing how to mix it up at times, will help out your game play. The more you play the better you will get at your strategy.
